But Deylen cannot tell Seneca he is a shifter. Seneca is a mortal, so he is not sure what to do or even how his clan would feel if he took a mortal as a mate. As Deylen and Seneca become closer, Deylen's rival is watching and waiting for the moment to strike. When Seneca is kidnapped by Koda, she is scared, especially when he shifts into half spider, half man. Deylen knows that Koda has Seneca. He can only hope to get her out before she is hurt or worse—killed. But, would Seneca still want him when she learns just what he is? This is a fascinating story filled with action, danger and exciting characters. Pulling you in from the first page, this tale will hold you enthralled until the very end. There are plenty of exciting twists and turns to keep you turning pages. This reader became lost in this story and the romance between Deylen and Seneca, and the struggle they go through. This is one high powered, intoxicating read. It will leave you feeling breathless. SCORPIO RISEN introduces two unusual species of shape shifters: scorpions in the form of the Centruroides clan and spiders represented by the Loxosceles clan. Like werewolf clans, each has its own Alpha male whose impetus is to rule the clan and to provide an heir who will become the next Alpha. Author Desiree Lee includes an astonishing amount of detail concerning the individual species, and imaginatively provides a method by which the shifters can morph into a combination of human and arachnid form, unlike the common complete shift which takes place with werewolves and feline shifters. The undercurrent of desire percolating between Deylen and Seneca heats the plot while Deylen's discovery of Seneca's secret plans and methods plays against the backdrop of the violent Koda Webb's territorial imperative. I found the descriptions of the scorpion and spider shifting fascinating as well as the delineation of the clan hierarchies and roles. Deylen Troika is the new Alpha of the clan of scorpion shifters after his parents are killed. He is also the owner of a lab studying toxins, to appear legitimate among humans. Forced to hire a new employee for his lab, Deylen has to go outside of his clan to find someone with the qualifications he needs. He notices that his new employee, Seneca McLane, is beautiful; if only her personality wasn't so standoffish. Deylen uncovers Seneca’s secret talent, bringing them closer together; much closer than he would have imagined. It also puts his own secret in danger of being discovered as they embark on a risky game of chance and an affair. When a rival clan leader challenges Deylen for the right to rule the city, Seneca is caught up in a fight that she knows nothing about. Can Deylen keep his clan and personal affairs separate to protect her innocence or will she become an unwilling player in the fight for dominance among the shifters? First let me say that I have an innate fear of anything normally born with less than two or more than four legs. That being said I enjoyed Scorpio Risen immensely. The description of the characters in shifted form was sufficiently vague enough to no push my “ick” button, but detailed enough that I got a good idea of how the characters would look and fight. The love scenes were well written and the plot was excellent. This is the second book that I have read by Ms. Lee and I feel it is safe to say she is a promising author on the rise. Not one to mix business with pleasure, she couldn’t keep her eyes off of her boss. One night a meeting in the casino is all it took to let her inhibitions run wild and make love to Deylen Troika, although she had no idea he was a scorpion shifter. That comes later when she is abducted by the werespider Koda and bitten, and told of Deylen’s true form. Now she must fight to stay alive and face the man she has fallen in love with, is it possible to love such a creature? Will Deylen exile himself just so he can be with Seneca… or is there yet one more option… the change? Desiree Lee’s novella Scorpion Risen is a great erotic tale of passion, fighting for love, and life. The idea of werearachnids was actually pretty intriguing and the love and lust shared between Seneca and Deylen was written tastefully and well it was just plain HOT! She knew she took this job for the money to put her through school but she had no idea there would be such a bonus like Deylen Troika. Working together, Deylen and Seneca plan to make themselves some money but what they did not know was Deylens enemy Koda was lying in wait. Koda knows Deylen will do anything to save his mate. Can Deylen make it in time to save Seneca? Will Seneca be willing to except what Deylen is after the frighting experience she had being kidnapped by a Werespider? Come read this unique were shifter book to find out. Scorpio Risen will have you on edge till you turn the last page. It is a wonderfully different Were story that has some interesting characters. Deylen and Seneca passion for each other can be felt from the first moment they meet in the lab. But will that passion be enough? Desirée Lee is phenomenal!! The way her mind spins out the story and captures the reader with in the words, spine tingling. When Deylen’s father is killed, he becomes the alpha of the werearachnid clan, the Centruroides. Six months later, he receives his first challenge as alpha. The other main clan in the area, the Loxosceles, is led by Koda, a vicious fighter, with a reputation for being a man not to be tangled with. Koda and his clan are spider shifters and are not nice or easy to deal with. Deylen is the owner of a toxicology lab. When he is in need of a new employee, he has no choice but to look outside of his clan to find someone with the correct qualifications. His new employee, Seneca, is beautiful, but also very strong-willed and opinionated, to the point of being rude at times. If she were sweet, she would be the perfect woman. While out and about, scoping out his rival clan, Deylen runs into Seneca and uncovers a secret about her. He has no idea that this idea will bring them closer together, or that uncovering her secret will put his secret in danger of being discovered by Seneca. When Koda and the Loxosceles challenge him for control of the city, Seneca is caught up in the middle of the war. Deylen must try to keep his secret safe from Seneca, or she could become a pawn in the war between the two clans. Desirée Lee wrote a unique shape shifter story, of werearachnids. This was a first for me and I was not so sure if I would enjoy it. However, Ms. Lee took the time to explain how the clan works, as well as describing in detail the werearachnids’ ability to shift, totally and partially, keeping their bodies half human. Deylen is a strong alpha who has endured a lot over the last several months, forcing him to grow up and change quicker than he had anticipated. Seneca is first presented as an irritating, but intelligent woman. When her aspirations in life are explained, I could understand more of why she acts the way she does, and enjoyed her character much more. The attraction between Deylen and Seneca kept the story hot, while the action of the clan war kept it interesting.
